Bikepacking along the Dutch coast and Wadden Islands
Bikepacking along the Dutch coast and Wadden Islands This photo series follows a multi-day bikepacking journey along the Dutch coast and across several Wadden Islands. The route runs from South Holland via North Holland to Friesland, connecting the mainland with Texel, Vlieland, Terschelling, Ameland, and Schiermonnikoog. The journey uses ferries and traditional sailing ships to travel from island to island, capturing a unique form of island hopping in the Netherlands. The series shows how cyclists navigate independently and with minimal luggage through diverse landscapes: from concrete coastal cycle paths to wet beaches, salt marshes, dune valleys, and the open sea. Along the way, moments of exertion alternate with rest: making coffee in the field, refilling water, camping among the bushes, or overlooking the mudflats. The images are taken from the perspective of one traveler and reflect the principle of bikepacking: traveling light and independently by bike, often combined with wild or natural camping. Crossing the Wadden Sea by barge, sleeping at nature campsites, and cycling through tidal landscapes make island hopping an integrated part of the journey, rather than simply a matter of movement. The series emphasizes the rhythm of travel, the proximity to nature, and the intimate interaction between people, bicycles, and the landscape, with an eye for space, tranquility, and the ever-changing environment.
